Please describe the project specifications

This project consisted of reconstruction of existing taxilane at the Santa Maria Airport. The Airport is located three miles south of Santa Maria in northern Santa Barbara County, California. The taxilane had deteriorating asphalt pavement based on weak underlying soils. The total project construction was approximately $500,000. The project was awarded to JJ Fisher and completed in August 2016. The existing structural section was removed. The subgrade was prepared and a layer of Mirafi® RS380i was placed over the subgrade. A 18 inch thick layer of native fill was placed over the geotextile followed by aggregate base and asphalt pavement.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

This project involved reconstruction of an existing taxilane because of deteriorating asphalt pavement. Reconstruction involved sawcutting, removal, and disposal of the existing failing structural section. The subgrade was leveled, and a layer of Mirafi® RS380i high strength woven geotextile was then placed over the leveled subgrade. Twelve inches of native fill were placed over the RS380i at 100 percent compaction, followed by 6 inches of native material at 95 percent compaction. Eight inches of Class 2 aggregate base followed by 6 inches of asphalt were placed over the native fill.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The depth of unstable isolated areas varied from 12 to 36 inches. Mirafi® RS380i was placed at the bottom of the excavation.

What were the results of the project?

The civil and geotechnical engineer continue to specify RSi high strength woven geotextiles for subgrade stabilization for other airport projects in the Central Coast including the Santa Barbara Airport, Lompoc Airport and another project at the Santa Maria Airport.
