Please describe the project specifications

"Hollywood Arches" is the centerpiece of the Art Directors Guild (ADG) 21st Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards Ceremony stage set. It represents a scaled version, 35’ wide by 17’ 6” tall by 15’ 3” deep, of the semi-circular arches of the Hollywood Bowl.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The ADG Excellence in Production Design Awards Ceremony moved to a new venue in 2017, the Ray Dolby Ballroom on the top floor of The Loews Hollywood Hotel, home of the famous Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. The ADG wanted to create a new stage set for the ceremony and they wanted it to represent the Hollywood Bowl, the classic outdoor venue in Hollywood Hills.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The venue was not available for set-up until the day of the event, so assembly of the stage set needed to be quick and easy. The stage set also needed to break down for compact storage and to minimize transportation costs.

The "Hollywood Arches" stage set consist of 6 concentric arches secured to each other to create a self-supporting free-standing unit. The addition of 2 hang points ensured compliance with California's seismic building code. The entire set, including the Hollywood Arches and the Crescendos, disassembled fits into three 32 cubic foot road cases.

What were the results of the project?

The ADG 21st Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards Ceremony was held Saturday, February 11, 2017. Winners include La La Land, Hidden Figures, and Passengers.

Presenters entered the stage beneath the arches. A video wall, placed behind the smallest rear arch, displayed images of painted back drops from familiar classic award-winning stage sets. The white fabric arches also served as a 3-D projection surface for a dynamic video and lighting projection design. Projections on the arches came from projectors embedded into the front of the stage, with the acute angle compensated for by key-stoning the imagery. Stars of different theme colors were projected to match what was shown on the video wall. And lightblock was used in all the arches to ensure the framework was invisible and to eliminate light bleed. Additionally, two 14' x 22' "Crescendos," ready-made pieces from Transformit’s Fascinating Rhythms collection, flanked the "Hollywood Arches," housing large side monitors showing trailers for the nominated movies and TV productions as well as the live feed of the televised event.

The ADG was delighted with the cost, ease of setup, transportation, utility, and overall aesthetics of the "Hollywood Arches" design, and they are looking forward to using it for several more years.
