Please describe the project specifications

The Amphitheater at Miramar Regional Park is an over 90-foot-high, twin-peak Tensile Membrane Structure using Mehler F-Type PVC material. The structure is open-sided and tilts up to enclose the top of the stagehouse building. The amphitheater roof covers over 25,000 Square feet with an audience capacity of 2500. The audience area is non-raked and can be set up for any seating configuration.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The City of Miramar wanted a dramatic, signature event facility for the Regional Park that could be a true multi-purpose amenity. Budgetary concerns were the biggest issue and Span Systems worked with the owner over a several year period to evolve the design to achieve the maximum possible coverage and impact while keeping within budgetary constraints.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The structure is extremely light weight yet designed for South Florida hurricane force winds. It is unique in its "tilt-up" profile with an 11.5 foot eave clearance at the rear with the fabric rising up to a 47 foot clearance over the top of the stagehouse. The tensile roof itself is structurally independent of the stagehouse superstructure.

What were the results of the project?

The project resulted in a signature building that has exceeded the expectations of the stakeholders in the project. The unique, lightweight appearance of the structure, with slender masts and tie-down assemblies illustrates the best use of a Tensile System. It is a great example of a simple, elegant, cost-effective and dependable tensile system.
