Please describe the project specifications

The description of this project goes back to 1970. Camping with family was always an adventure in shade procurement. My father would devise different ideas and have us (his children + unsuspecting guests) help build his vision wherever we landed. He’s an inventor, so it was always a fun learning experience, and the memories are fond ones.

Fast forward to 2004, Sonoma Shade Sails was born. My partner Bob and I continued to camp and think about shade. Patrick Howe from Wholesale Shade took us under his wing and continued to give and support us until we were on our feet. Through the following years, continuing to amass knowledge and skills from real life lessons that only experience will teach you; always striving to improve on design and engineering. We are forever grateful the universe introduced us to Patrick.

During the pandemic down time, we decided to put our experience and knowledge towards this illusive sail concept that has been rolling around and developing for decades. Through design changes, engineering, and membrane development, our first 20’ x 20’ prototype went up “in-yard” December 2020. Bob took the original prototype frame; he and the engineer tweaked it to perfection. Finally, the icing on the cake, Wholesale Shade did a flawless job on the sail membrane. It brought the structure together with an understated elegance and artistry no one had fully anticipated. Our first finished TERRASHADE Sausalito 20-8 model was installed on July 21, 2021 at the Russian River Brewing Company in Windsor, Ca.

TERRASHADE is a patent pending, free-standing, semi-portable shade device engineered to 45mph wind. It can be attached via earth anchor or various weighted options. The unique crossmember design allows for the option of a magnetized sheer curtain divider to attach from above and create added individual privacy. With a frame dimension of 20’x20’, the added side panels create an approximate 28’x28’ shade footprint.

What is unique or complex about the project?

We have entered TERRASHADE to get feedback, and generally introduce our new shade device to the shade/tent industry and the world. Our new global climate has shown that outdoor living is here to stay more than ever. That coupled with actual real climate change, it is our vision that TERRASHADE will fill a unique niche with its unprecedented wind stability.
