Please describe the project specifications

The City of Honolulu revamped our world-famous Ala Moana beach park in an effort to renovate Hawaii's most loved beach. One of their improvements was the construction of a new comfort station that included a beautiful covered outdoor shower under a freestanding tensile canopy.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The City desired to provide a comfortable environment for beachgoers coming and going, built and engineered to withstand Hawaii's corrosive high-salinity environment. Just as important, the City also wanted to install this new shower away from the shoreline in an effort to prevent soap and shampoo runoff from entering the water, harming marine life.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The specifications required the use of both Schedule 80 & Schedule 160 pipe for this project, which proved quite challenging to bend. We also designed and fabricated a variety of custom, water-jet plates from 316 stainless due to the corrosive installation where the canopy is installed. A new pad was poured specifically for this project, including new plumbing and lava rock pedestals for our embedded posts. The color scheme was designated to blend the structure into the surrounding tree coverage and not detract from one of the most beautiful views in the world.

What were the results of the project?

A very happy customer and talks of repeat installations throughout the State! We also did our part to prevent runoff and help preserve and protect marine life and coral reefs in our oceans.
