Please describe the project specifications

A freestanding sunfly 24'x 8'6 in Stamoid top "sand" color, with welded seams ( we used a miller t300 extreme hot wedge welder), with 8 telescoping Stainless sunfly poles (by Canvas Designers Inc) with 4 height adjustments within 36" of travel, 3 front rollup clear Regalite vinyl windows , and 3 sides of rollup up Soltis 86 mesh drop curtains . We used 3-D scanning for initial layout and height dimensions.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The customers requested an enclosed area for the soundboard and technicians that would be adjustable in height and simple for assembly and disassembly before, during and after a show and to protect from sun, wind, and moisture. The goal was to protect the equipment and engineers during pre show at full height with standing room but sloped back towards the walkway . Then during the show if inclement weather is still a factor the height of the enclosure would be dropped to sitting height so it would not block the view of guests sitting behind the soundboard area. As well as being functional I designed an enclosure with a yachty style incorporating the custom sunfly system with marine fabrics for the top and sides.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The design of the poles and their installation. Canvas Designers did a nice job taking their sunfly pole design and creating a custom 2 piece very durable telescoping poles and still maintaining the yacht flare. Having 8 different pull points and 4 height variances on the cover with vertical weight created a challenge to keep the cover tight and looking appealing. Then we had the installation of the poles which were set into a rigid conduit couplings flush with the existing concrete. We had to locate the poles out of the way of seating, core the holes into the concrete and hope that we don't hit the wiring of the sound equipment and the special tiny wire for the hearing impaired which no one knew where it was located (the Santa Barbara Bowl and the Vatican are the only amphitheaters with this technology). Each hole had to be precisely drilled at the correct angle and measurement and the couplings set flush with the concrete floor in rapid set mortar.

What were the results of the project?

We exceeded their expectation with style, functionality, color and ease of use. The design of the cover blends in to the surroundings. We used sew on keder tape on the cover and sew on keder track on the vertical curtains which makes assembly and disassembly quick and simple for the stage hands
