Please describe the project specifications

We were approached by an architect who was wanting options for their commercial clients who wanted a system that would offer shade from the sun and from adverse weather in an outdoor dining area, on a second level commercial building the Central city in Christchurch.

We presented them with the Oztech all-weather retractable sunroof system as an option, which was accepted. We were required to measure, quote and 6 retractable oztech roof systems to existing steel structures that were already mounted on a second level balcony.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The purpose was to offer protection for an outdoor dining area from sun and adverse weather, but still be able to retract the roof so the warm Canterbury evenings and views of the clear sky could still be enjoyed

What is unique or complex about the project?

The clients also requested the system be fully automated for ease of use by all staff members. Integrated LED lighting was fitted to the retracting frame, which gave the structure an intimate indoor feel at sundown when closed, the prerequisite was that the lights needed to come on automatically once fully closed so special sensors were put in place, and wind sensors also needed to be mounted, in the event of high winds. Gutters were fitted into the structure, so they were not visible. All the sides were required to be covered, so the awnings looked part of the structure. Flashings required accurate measuring in order to give the system full water tightness.
Our challenge was to ensure the system fitted accurately in between existing steel structures, meaning very accurate measurements needed to be taken.
Due to the area being a public thoroughfare with high use during normal business hours, we were required to carry out all work out of normal business hours.

What were the results of the project?

The end result was visually stunning, and exceptional feedback was and still is being received from our clients.
