Please describe the project specifications

A cantilevered shade sail system that provides the school and its students with shade over their outdoor seating area with post situated in garden areas not encroaching on seats or walk ways.
The sail system was installed in the port town of Lyttelton and hence can be exposed to some strong winds.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The school needed a solution to provide shade over their outdoor seating area. The seating area was very long and narrow

The area we were working with was fully landscaped before we started, as a result the client didn't want any poles along the front of the seating or in the walkway.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The complexity in this project came in with the cantilevering of the shade sails. All the posts had to be custom made, extra supports to stop the system twisting were also installed.

We also had to deal with the difficult installation environment, all hole's were dug by hand as access was limited. The site was also situated in an area with volcanic rock so when digging our installers had to chip away at the rock at the bottom of the hole so we could install the footings required for these sails.

What were the results of the project?

The project met the clients brief exactly, the shade sail's provided shade over the seating area during the school day. All posts were situated in the garden area and therefore didn't obstruct the seating or walking area.

The final finish of the project also complimented the new school and was in keeping with the surrounding landscape.
