Please describe the project specifications

This was a rain plan tent for a cocktail hour after a wedding ceremony with two challenging trees

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client asked us to build a floor for the cocktail hour after a ceremony, and if rain was expected, we would tent over the floor with clear tents, as well as tents for the ceremony. We originally proposed a series of tents that could be built around the trees, but the designers wanted to surround the trees with round bars, and we decided a single tent, a Navitrac by Anchor Industries, was the best way to go. But the tall trees were quite a challenge.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Although The tent frame could be built around the trees, the trees themselves extended well above the tents. When the decision was made to install the rain tent due to the forecast, we had one day to get it done, and no second chances. We built and installed the frames and then took measurements as to where the limbs passed through the tent tops as best we could. One tree had just one large trunk, but the other had several large sprawling branches that would pass through the tent in six locations.
We took the measurements back to our shop and put the tent sections into surgery. We altered the tops to allow them to be installed passing through the trees limbs, and we added clear rain flaps that could cover the slices in the top and minimize any rain water getting through. Our goal was to let any rain water that did hit the tree to run down the tree trunk to the ground through the holes cut in the floor for each tree. We installed the tops the next day, and with some on-site alterations, they fit rather well.

What were the results of the project?

We had a downpour about 90 minutes before the ceremony. The tops held up well, and the trees worked just as planned, and channeled most of the water to the ground, although it was such an intense rain, some jumped to the floor. We were able to squeegee and towel dry any water on the floor. Then the sun came out, and the guests got to enjoy the view of the trees, and the shade they provided, beyond the tents.
