Please describe the project specifications

Our existing customer wanted to close in an outdoor area currently covered with large umbrellas, to give rain protection as well as sun protection. We developed a welded aluminium frame covered in Ultraclear PVC, which was strong enough to hold crank rolled drop curtains, and the addition of a gutter and some support for the umbrellas gave an outdoor room for summer and winter.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

Our customer wanted to close in his outdoor area, currently covered with umbrellas, to form an outdoor area suitable for summer and winter use.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Usually, when installing outdoor blinds, we close in around a fixed roof structure. The umbrellas had some movement in them and are not strong enough to mount the outdoor blinds. Even if we had mounted directly to the umbrellas it would have cut off a large amount of the outdoor usable space. So, we designed a welded aluminium framework to angle out from the umbrellas, covering two sides of the outdoor space. The framework was strong enough to hold the outdoor blinds, and fit up underneath the umbrellas to divert rain away. We also added a gutter between the existing umbrellas and the entryway to the restaurant to divert the rain away. Once the frames were installed we were able to measure for the outdoor blinds and these were installed a few days later.

What were the results of the project?

The customer is rapt, and is able to provide year round outdoor dining in all weather, which has increased h is turnover substantially already.
