Please describe the project specifications
Custom fabricated radius awning lightbox system for the bottom of a new front entrance of a hospital expansion, consisting of 36 aluminum and fabric canopy light panel modules in 8’ wide sections. The panels are various shapes and sizes with a totaling of 1,935 square feet. Each module includes a welded aluminum tubing frame and aluminum tensioning extrusion FACID system with a tensioned translucent Ferrari 402 fabric, internal aluminum composite sheet back, a front edge trim section and a rear aluminum transition trim piece. All exposed trim work was painted.
What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?
The client requested the lighting underneath the canopy to be the biggest light boxes available to produce one big glowing light with very few seams. We were able to have the 36 lightbox panels span 8’ x 10’ each without support for a total length of 280’. The canopy not only provides weather protection, but bright light for visitors, patients and employees allowing safe access in/out of the hospital building.
What is unique or complex about the project?
The fabrication is unique due to the size and geometry of the lightboxes and the ability to create a straight and radius shape canopy. The lightboxes needed to be open access for electrical purposes. An extreme amount of coordination took place during the process with the architect, contractors, electricians and hospital personnel.
What were the results of the project?
We were able to achieve the architect/ hospital owners vision and produce a canopy that exceeded their expectations. The brightly lit canopy adds an aesthetically pleasing element to the hospital in the evening hours.
