Please describe the project specifications

This project is a freestanding A-frame with hipped ends style canopy to replace an existing smaller canopy. Size of canopy is 14' wide x 80' long x 30" high with a 6" vertical truss. Complex drawings were submitted to engineer & then to city for approval of permits. Over 2,000' of various types of metal was used for the frame & posts. 110 yards of fabric was used to complete the cover. One side of canopy posts were attached to knee wall while the other side was attached to existing concrete slab. Canopy had to be built around (4) palm trees.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The purpose of the project was to create more of a shaded area for spectators to enjoy watching the baseball games. To ensure we delivered what the client requested, the new canopy needed to be wider than the existing canopy, which resulted in (4) palm trees interfering with the layout of the canopy. Therefore we had to incorporate the palm trees inboard of the canopy's perimeter.

What is unique or complex about the project?

What makes this project unique is the canopy is built around (4) large palm trees. Due to the uniqueness, it, in return, made for a complex project. Canopy had a complex frame layout to determine the palm trees location at elevation; where the palm trees would actually follow with the slope and perimeter of the canopy. We had to fabricate a bolt-in truss system at each palm tree location to continue perimeter truss, both for strength and aesthetics. We had to do layouts for the upright placements on both sides of the canopy; one side to bolt to knee wall, other side had the palm trees to steer clear of. We also had to keep in mind to build the canopy so it could be transported, which made it even more difficult on the placement of each upright. The cover was reinforced on all corners where cutouts were around the palm trees as well as had to stop and start cover around each tree. There were a total of (12) double lacers and (12) notches were made to relive the material to go around the sections of the palm tree frame work.

What were the results of the project?

The results of the project was a very satisfied client. As a result, we have completed another canopy at the same ball park. We also felt very proud of the hard work & determination to make certain the canopy was designed, built and installed per the customer's request. We're positive the spectators of the baseball games are enjoying the large shaded area in the hot Florida sun!
